Secrets To Success
A researcher who spent five years studying rich people found that one of their secrets to success lay in how early they got up in the morning.

While rich people would have attained success by being different or courting risks, they seemed to have one common habit and that is getting up early. For example, Richard Branson gets up at 5.45 AM while Jack Dosey, the CEO of Square, gets up at 5.30 AM. Majority of those who get up early exercises or meditates before starting their day.

Thomas C. Corley, who spent five years studying 177 self made millionaires, found that many of his subjects were early risers and that about 50 per cent of them woke up three hours before the start of their work day. The extra time available in the morning helped these millionaires to accomplish what they had to do for the day in spite of inevitable disruptions, such as delayed meetings or rush hour traffic. Getting up early allowed them more time to deal with crunch situations, thereby helping them make better decisions.

In his book, ‘Change Your Habits, Change Your Life,’ which is literally a research report on some of the top millionaires, Corley says, “Life has a way of throwing wrenches into our day. How many of us raise our hands in frustration at the end of a work day because the three or four things we wanted to get done were somehow replaced by unanticipated disruptions?”

When unexpected things disrupt our schedules, we feel that we are not in control and that leads us to feel that we are helpless or are driven by some unknown force. According to Corley, waking up early would give a head start that you can utilise to your benefit when the unexpected happens.

According to Corley, when one gets up in the morning and gets some tasks done, it gives a sense of achievement and the confidence to meet more challenges in the day. Above all, it provides buffer time, which can be utilised to make some quick adjustments all through the day. At the end of the day, one is left feeling fresh with a feeling of accomplishment.

In order to practice early rising, Corley recommends having an activity partner who would also get up at a predetermined time in the morning. More importantly, it is vital not to procrastinate.
