A group of graffiti artists from Barcelona, known as Street Cy₿er, have been on a mission to spread the word about Bitcoin through their street art. Since their formation in January 2023, they have been busy creating Bitcoin-inspired artwork across Europe, including cities such as London, Berlin, Madrid, Prague, Riga, and Tallin. Their work aims to deliver powerful messages about the failures of the traditional financial system and how Bitcoin can provide an alternative.
Street, one of the co-founders of Street Cy₿er, explained that their motivation behind the Bitcoin street art is to advocate for a fairer world. He believes that the symbiosis between street art and Bitcoin is powerful, as they both contribute to creating a more just and equitable society. By bypassing traditional media, such as newspapers and television, they are able to reach a broader audience and raise awareness about cryptocurrency.
The Street Cy₿er website features over 70 images of their artwork, all of which prominently feature the Bitcoin logo or name. One of their most thought-provoking pieces is the artwork that says “Buy Bitcoin, Defund The State.” The intention behind this piece is to prompt people to consider how Bitcoin can help create a freer society by reducing the role of the state in people’s lives. Street believes that Bitcoin is a peaceful way to protest against the state and its policies, providing individuals with an alternative to the traditional financial system.
Another piece of street art by Street Cy₿er carries the message “Make War Unaffordable.” Street explains that because of Bitcoin’s scarcity, it would be more difficult for governments to finance wars. If wars were hypothetically funded by Bitcoin, the transparency of the cryptocurrency would make it harder for state actors to hide war spending. This message aims to promote peace and freedom around the world.
Street Cy₿er also advocates for the use of Bitcoin to fund education rather than printing money. They believe that if governments allocated Bitcoin to education, it could make free education worldwide a possibility. Due to Bitcoin’s scarcity, governments would have to be more accountable in how they spend it, leading to a prioritization of education.
While many of Street Cy₿er’s artworks carry political messages, they also cater to fans of popular culture. They have created artwork that combines the Bitcoin logo with characters such as Mario and Ronald McDonald, appealing to cartoon lovers and spreading awareness about cryptocurrency in a more lighthearted way.
To further their mission, Street Cy₿er has recently launched a project called “Bitcoin: The Art of Revolution” in Barcelona. The project will feature exhibitions, workshops, and classes for those who want to learn more about Bitcoin and its potential impact on society.
In addition to street art, Bitcoin proponents have found other creative ways to spread the word about the cryptocurrency. This includes projecting the Bitcoin logo with messages onto prominent buildings, such as the European Central Bank in Frankfurt and the Berliner Fernsehturm tower. Others have used stickers to raise awareness in public spaces.
Overall, Street Cy₿er and other Bitcoin advocates are using their artistic skills to advocate for a fairer world and promote the benefits of cryptocurrency. Through their street art and creative projects, they are reaching a wider audience and sparking conversations about the potential of Bitcoin in reshaping our financial and social systems.
