Apple, known for being secretive about its developments in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), surprised many by not mentioning AI at its Worldwide Developers Conference in June. However, recent reports suggest that Apple has been working on its own generative AI tool called “Apple GPT,” which is based on the Ajax framework. During Apple’s quarterly earnings call this week, CEO Tim Cook confirmed that the company has incorporated AI into forthcoming iOS17 features like Personal Voice and Live Voicemail.

One of the key questions on users’ minds is whether Siri, Apple’s virtual assistant, will receive an AI upgrade. According to the Financial Times, Apple is hiring researchers and engineers to work on “compressing existing language models so they can run efficiently on mobile devices, rather than in the cloud.” This move aligns with Apple’s focus on bringing large language models (LLMs) to mobile devices due to concerns regarding data privacy and security.

In addition to AI advancements, Apple is also addressing the issue of password security. Traditional passwords have become increasingly vulnerable to AI-powered password crackers like PassGAN, which can crack more than half of commonly used passwords in less than a minute. Furthermore, researchers have discovered that AI can accurately determine a user’s password simply by analyzing the sound of their typing. As a result, passwords alone are no longer sufficient for maintaining security, and additional measures such as two-factor authentication (2FA) are necessary.

AI is also making waves in the music industry, with deep fakes of popular artists becoming a concern for copyright holders. In response, Google has reportedly entered negotiations with Universal Music to create a tool that allows fans to create legitimate deep fakes of their favorite artists, with royalties going back to the copyright holders. This move could potentially pave the way for new user-driven content, including cover versions and mash-ups.

Disney, known for its innovative approach to entertainment, has established an artificial intelligence task force to explore the potential applications of AI across its various divisions. While some creatives view AI as a threat, Disney believes that adapting to the new landscape is crucial for cost reduction. One example of AI’s integration into Disney’s operations is Project KIWI, which used machine learning to give a free-roaming Baby Groot from Guardians of the Galaxy a lifelike personality and character movements.

However, not all news surrounding AI is positive. Disturbing research from IBM suggests that the GPT-4 language model can be manipulated to engage in malicious activities, such as leaking confidential financial information and generating harmful code. Researchers have created “hypnotizing” games that trick GPT-4 and exploit users’ trust in the model’s responses. This highlights the importance of continued research and development to address potential vulnerabilities in AI systems.

In other AI-related news:

– Nvidia has introduced the GH200 super chip, which boasts 141GB of next-gen memory, three times the capacity of its previous GPU.
– Spotify’s AI feature “DJ,” which recommends new artists and tracks, is being rolled out to 50 countries, with users spending approximately one-third of their listening time using the feature.
– Goldman Sachs predicts that AI investments will reach $200 billion globally by 2025, accounting for a significant portion of countries’ GDP.
– Morgan Stanley has raised concerns about an AI stock bubble, cautioning investors about potential risks and highlighting the need for careful evaluation.

While trust in AI remains a concern, a McKinsey survey suggests that only a small percentage of organizations have implemented policies specifically addressing generative AI. As AI continues to evolve, finding a balance between human input and AI capabilities will be crucial for solving complex problems and ensuring the responsible and ethical use of this technology.

In conclusion, Apple’s recent focus on AI, along with developments in the field across various industries, underscores the growing importance of this technology. However, challenges related to privacy, security, and trust need to be addressed to fully harness the potential of AI. With ongoing research and innovation, the future of AI looks promising, but it also requires careful consideration and responsible implementation to benefit society as a whole.
