J.W. Verret, known as “BlockProf” or the Blockchain Professor, is an attorney and educator who has become deeply involved in the cryptocurrency sector. In addition to teaching corporate finance and accounting at George Mason University, Verret is the founder of Crypto Freedom Lab, a think tank that advocates for freedom and privacy for crypto developers and users. He also works as a professional legal witness for defendants accused of evading financial-tracking laws and is writing a book on blockchain privacy and forensics.

When asked about his interest in cryptocurrency, Verret explained that he spent many years working in libertarian regulation and finance in Washington, D.C. However, he became disillusioned with government regulation and saw crypto as a freedom revolution in finance. He believes that cryptocurrency can fix problems in finance by eliminating the need for intermediaries that government regulation often supports.

Verret served on the SEC’s Investor Advisory Committee and has been critical of SEC Chairman Gary Gensler. While he had a positive experience on the committee, Verret doubts that he will be invited back under the current chairman. He believes that Gensler has been trying to destroy the crypto industry and has sued reputable actors like Coinbase and Kraken while ignoring the worst offenders.

As a vocal proponent of privacy in cryptocurrency, Verret is particularly interested in Zcash. He sees it as a tremendous innovation that offers privacy for day-to-day payments, which is lacking in Bitcoin. He also mentioned being a fan of Monero and highlighted projects like Samourai Wallet and Sparrow Wallet that provide privacy for Bitcoin transactions.

When asked about the future of crypto, Verret believes that it will be defined by a combination of factors. While efficiency and scale will play a role, he sees privacy as an integral part of the industry. He believes that as governments and corporations fight against trustless and disintermediated property transfers, privacy coins and protocols will be crucial for protecting individuals.

Verret is currently involved in the U.S. v. Sterlingov case, where he is serving as a professional witness. Roman Sterlingov is charged with developing Bitcoin Fog, a crypto mixer accused of laundering $336 million. Verret’s expertise in forensic accounting and money laundering has been valuable in assisting the legal team. He also works with customers of crypto exchanges when their funds are frozen due to false flags by tracing tools.

In addition to his work in the crypto industry, Verret has a fascination with UFOs. He recommends podcasts and books on the subject and believes that UFOs exist as unmanned probes simply observing human activity.

Overall, J.W. Verret’s passion for cryptocurrency, privacy, and forensic investigation has led him to become a notable figure in the industry. His expertise and perspectives on the future of crypto and the importance of privacy highlight the ongoing developments and challenges in the field.
