A Salvadoran teenager named Gerardo Moran recently shared his inspiring journey of completing El Salvador’s Bitcoin diploma program, known as Mi Primer Bitcoin, which translates to My First Bitcoin. This program, supported by El Salvador’s Ministry of Education, has had a profound impact on Moran’s life, allowing him to escape his previous job in construction where he earned only $6 a day. Now, Moran has returned to his former high school to educate the teachers about Bitcoin and share his newfound knowledge.

In a series of tweets on July 8, Moran expressed his gratitude for the Mi Primer Bitcoin program. He talked about how he had been working since the age of 11, primarily in construction and tourism, and had always wondered why Salvadoran citizens had to work so hard for such little reward. Moran explained that earning just $6 a day in construction was not sustainable for him anymore, so he decided to quit without knowing what opportunities lay ahead.

Moran’s life changed when his school announced the Bitcoin diploma course. Intrigued by the prospect, he applied and excelled in the program. Now, at the age of 18, Moran is leading Bitcoin education in his hometown, training and teaching the Bitcoin Diploma to a group of 8 senior professors at his former high school, Antonio J. Alfaro school.

This remarkable initiative comes as no surprise, as Mi Primer Bitcoin has already garnered significant support from Bitcoin education advocates worldwide. Since May 4, the program has raised over 1 Bitcoin in donations, with contributions coming from generous individuals in countries like Poland and Canada. These donations were made over the Lightning Network, a layer-two solution for Bitcoin that enables faster and cheaper transactions.

Gilberto Motto, El Salvador’s director of education, emphasized the government’s focus on educating its citizens about Bitcoin, particularly teenagers. Motto stated that reaching every 16 or 17-year-old in the country would effectively teach the entire nation within one year. This strategic approach recognizes the influence young people have within their families, as they can share their knowledge with their parents, siblings, and extended relatives.

Moran’s personal journey and dedication to teaching others about Bitcoin exemplify the transformative potential of cryptocurrency education. By equipping young Salvadorans with this knowledge, the government aims to promote financial inclusion and empower its citizens in the digital age. The Mi Primer Bitcoin program is not only providing opportunities for individuals like Moran but also instilling a sense of hope and possibility in communities across El Salvador.

The success of Mi Primer Bitcoin showcases the significance of education in driving adoption and acceptance of cryptocurrencies. With the support of individuals around the world and the commitment of dedicated educators like Moran, El Salvador is paving the way for a future where Bitcoin is more widely understood and integrated into everyday life.
