Davey Pearson, a mortgage broker, recently transformed an old, empty shed in his backyard into a cozy pub. Spending approximately £3,000 ($3,800) on the entire DIY project, Pearson created a space where his family and friends could hang out and relax.
When Pearson moved into his new home three years ago, he sought a space where he could escape from his four children and unwind. The previous owners had left an empty shed in the backyard, measuring 18 feet by 9 feet, which seemed like the perfect spot for Pearson’s mancave. However, it ended up becoming a space for his entire family to enjoy.
Having previously converted a garage into a pub in his old neighborhood, Pearson had experience in creating a home pub atmosphere. During the pandemic, he hosted online pub quizzes in his old garage, streaming them on a local newspaper’s Facebook page. Encouraged by the success of these virtual events, Pearson decided to recreate the pub experience in his new home.
Despite the shed being old, dirty, and lacking proper flooring and insulation, Pearson was determined to turn it into a comfortable space. Over a period of six months, he worked on the project, mostly on his own. With no professional construction background, Pearson relied on his own DIY skills to complete the job.
First, Pearson insulated the walls and ceiling to ensure the building was suitable for year-round use. He then lined the walls with plasterboard, painted them a deep greyish-blue shade, and added wall moldings for character. The most challenging part of the process was installing the ceiling while balancing on a ladder. Additionally, Pearson worked on the outdoor area surrounding the pub, creating a shingled area where people can sit outside in the sun.
Pearson estimates that he spent around £3,000 ($3,800) on the entire project, including the cost of electrical work. The most expensive part was hiring an electrician to run power to the shed. While there is no water supply at the moment, Pearson plans to add one in the future, including a toilet.
Completed in July of 2022, Pearson’s backyard pub differs from his previous one in that it is detached from the house and larger in size. He was able to furnish the space with donated pub furniture from friends who ran real pubs back in Sussex. The pub is not open to the public but serves as a gathering place for Pearson’s family and friends when they come to visit.
Pearson has no regrets about his DIY project and believes that others could undertake similar builds for various reasons, such as creating a games room or a cinema. The space has provided his family with an opportunity to spend quality time together outdoors, away from screens and distractions.
