The Red Cross is set to receive a generous donation of 120 gold bars that were discovered on a Swiss train four years ago. According to Swiss prosecutors, the gold bars were found in October 2019 by an attendant on a Swiss Federal Railways train traveling from St. Gallen to Lucerne. The bars, which were labeled with a logo and serial numbers, had a total weight of 3.7 kilograms and an estimated value of $220,000.

The package containing the gold bars also had the words ‘ICRC valuables’ on it, leading investigators to believe that it was intended for the Geneva-based International Committee of the Red Cross. As a result, an investigation was launched and the discovery was publicized in the hope of finding the rightful owner of the gold. Over the years, several individuals inquired about the gold, but none were able to provide sufficient evidence of ownership.

After extensive efforts to determine the owner and establish a connection to any possible property crime, the prosecutor’s office has decided to hand over the gold to the Red Cross to close the case. They stated, “Despite extensive investigations, the owner of the gold bars could not be determined. Thus, neither the owner of the gold nor a connection with a possible property crime could be determined. Since the gold was in a package addressed to the ICRC, it can be assumed that the unknown owner wanted to hand over the gold to this organization. Thus, the find is handed over to the ICRC.”

Although the Red Cross has yet to receive the donation, they have already expressed their gratitude for this generous contribution. The organization plans to sell the gold bars upon receiving them in order to fund their global humanitarian operations. In a statement, the Red Cross said, “We extend our appreciation for this generous contribution to the ICRC, which will play a vital role in sustaining our global humanitarian operations. The received donation will significantly contribute to financing ICRC’s worldwide operations, dedicated to protecting and assisting the most vulnerable people impacted by war and violence.”

However, the Red Cross also emphasized that while they appreciate all forms of support, they prefer donations to be made through more traditional means. This suggests that they would prefer monetary donations or other forms of aid that can directly support their work.

The donation of these gold bars to the Red Cross highlights the importance of philanthropy in supporting humanitarian organizations. By providing financial resources, these organizations can continue their vital work in helping those most in need. The Red Cross’s dedication to assisting vulnerable individuals affected by war and violence is commendable, and this donation will undoubtedly make a significant impact on their operations.

In conclusion, the Red Cross is about to receive a valuable donation of 120 gold bars discovered on a Swiss train. Despite efforts to find the owner, the prosecutor’s office decided to hand over the gold to the Red Cross, who plans to sell it to support their humanitarian operations. This donation serves as a reminder of the importance of philanthropy in enabling organizations like the Red Cross to assist those in need.
