According to Vadim Filatov, a logistics services operator from PEC, Russian transportation companies are facing a “catastrophic shortage” of long-haul truck drivers weighing more than 3.5 tons. Over the past five years, the shortage has increased from 15% to 21%, which means that the industry needs approximately 60,000 more drivers. Filatov also mentioned that his own company is experiencing a shortage of about 5% of its full-time truck driver force.

The shortage of long-haul truck drivers in Russia can be attributed to several factors. Filatov pointed out shortcomings in education as one of the reasons for the shortage. The low prestige of the profession is also deterring potential drivers from pursuing a career in long-distance truck driving. Additionally, the nature of the job, which requires drivers to spend weeks away from their families, makes it unappealing to many.

PEC is one of the leading logistics companies in Russia, serving over 4.5 million clients each year and delivering goods to various destinations abroad. However, they are not the only company facing this issue. Several other transport companies have also reported the shortage to Vedomosti, a Russian newspaper.

In an attempt to address the shortage and explore new possibilities, a pilot project was launched in June to test self-driving trucks between Moscow and St. Petersburg. Although the vehicles are currently accompanied by test engineers, the government aims to have fully unmanned trucks on the road within two to three years.

The shortage of long-haul truck drivers in Russia has the potential to impact the transportation industry, as well as the economy as a whole. It is crucial for the government and industry stakeholders to find solutions that can attract more people to the profession and address the underlying issues causing the shortage.
