Russia has implemented a temporary ban on rice exports until the end of this year, in an effort to support the domestic market. The government decision was announced on Wednesday via a statement posted on the messaging platform Telegram. The ban, which encompasses both raw and processed rice, aims to maintain stability in the country’s internal rice trade.

The restriction on rice exports will be effective until December 31, 2023. The Russian government expressed its objective to ensure stability within the domestic market, prompting the imposition of the ban. However, it is worth noting that the ban does not apply to other members of the Eurasian Economic Union, namely Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Additionally, it does not include South Ossetia and Abkhazia.

While Russia is halting the export of rice, exceptions have been made for humanitarian aid purposes. Rice shipments for such purposes will still be allowed. Furthermore, rice can also pass through Russian territory in transit to other destinations.

This temporary ban on rice exports is reminiscent of a recent policy adopted by India, the largest rice exporter globally. India has also imposed restrictions on overseas sales of non-basmati white rice. New Delhi stated that the move was necessary to ensure adequate availability in the domestic market and to alleviate any increase in prices.

The actions of both Russia and India reflect efforts by these major rice-exporting countries to maintain stability and control market conditions within their respective borders. By restricting exports, they aim to ensure an adequate supply of rice for their citizens at reasonable prices.

In conclusion, Russia’s decision to suspend rice exports until the end of the year aims to support the stability of the domestic rice market. The temporary ban, which includes both raw and processed rice, is expected to be in effect until December 31, 2023. Exceptions have been made for humanitarian aid, and rice can also transit through Russian territory. This policy mirrors the recent actions taken by India, the world’s largest rice exporter, to secure sufficient availability and mitigate domestic price increases.
