Belgian MP Christophe De Beukelaer Becomes First European Politician To Accept Salary in Bitcoin

Accepting wage payments in cryptocurrency appears to be becoming more popular with legislators around the world.
Christophe De Beukelaer of Brussels, Belgium, has become the first European politician to convert his salary into Bitcoin tokens. According to NDTV, the MP receives a monthly salary of EUR 5,500 (approximately Rs. 4.5 lakh), which equates to BTC 0.17.
Beukelaer shows confidence in the crypto sector
Beukelaer explained in a thread on his Twitter handle that this is his way of demonstrating his faith in the crypto sector.
In one of his tweets, Beukelaer thanked Eric Adams, the mayor of New York City in the United States, for motivating him to take this pro-crypto step.
Adams has elected to get his salary in Bitcoins to promote more pro-crypto legislation in New York City.
The trend of getting paid in crypto
Previously, Miami Mayor Francis Suarez made news for his preference for Bitcoin payments. Suarez stated earlier this year that Miami planned to pay government personnel in Bitcoin while also allowing citizens to pay city taxes in the cryptocurrency.
While the idea of getting paid in crypto assets is still gaining traction among politicians, it has already caught on among athletes.
This month, NBA stars Klay Thompson and Andre Iguodala chose to receive a portion of their future pay in Bitcoin tokens.
Billionaire investor Mark Cuban’s team Dallas Mavericks has been accepting payments using digital assets via BitPay since 2019, according to the report.
