FAA Seek Pilots to Undergo Tests as Part of Paid Study

By IAN MOLYNEAUX

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is recruiting pilots who will be attending the Experimental Aircraft Association’s (EAA) AirVenture Oshkosh 2023 in the United States (US) to participate in a paid research study.

The FAA is seeking pilots of 18+ years of age who have flown at least once in the last six months, including training simulator time, and who hold a current medical certification Class I, II, or III (not BasicMed).

Those participating will complete two computerized cognitive tests, related to tasks such as working memory, attention, mental rotation and multitasking performance.

The purpose of this study is to obtain pilot normative data for the computerized tests, which will then be used to help recertify pilots for flying, following them experiencing a medical event such as stroke or head injury.

The results of this study should help to ensure that aeromedical decision-making is based on the most current scientific data and will contribute to the safety of the national airspace system.

Each study session takes about four hours and pilots will receive either $300, $400, or $500 (dependent on medical certification class). Payment is dispersed immediately following participation.

AirVenture is held over seven days from July 24 to July 30, 2023, in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. It’s billed as the world’s largest airshow, where aviation enthusiasts from 80 countries converge to celebrate the world of flight.

The study has received FAA Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval.
