Heart Complications Update
By kylewarnermtb
Hey everyone sorry for being quiet the past two weeks. I’ve been pretty much bed ridden and haven’t had energy to do much aside from go to the doctors appointments. I just got my results back from the Cardiologist and I do have swelling of the heart ( pericarditis) from an adverse reaction to my Pfizer vaccine. It does sound like it will fully heal in time but I’m supposed to be on medication for the next 6 months and no or limited exercise for 3-6 months. Definitely not how I planned on spending summer but that’s how life goes sometimes. I’m just grateful that the doctors all say that this will heal and I can lead a normal life going forward.
My cardiologist did say he has seen some guys just like me (20 to 30) years old and in decent shape coming in with the same thing recently and everyone does seem to get better with the medication.
When I asked my new primary doctor what her thoughts were, she said that for guys like me, she has been recommending doing an anti body test first, before getting vaccinated ( just in case you had it without knowing). getting vaccinated with 1 dose, and then checking antibody levels again before dose 2. Some of her patients have a good enough antibody response after 1 dose that they don’t need to go through the second dose which seems to cause the majority of these issues in younger guys because their immune response is so aggressive against the s1 spike protein the second time around.
April and her family had zero side effects, and my mom and family had zero side effects. So if you are in the high risk warning group of 16-30 male like me and you do want / need to get it at some point then definitely take the extra time to talk to a doctor and maybe get the antibody tests done along the way.
Also I just hope sharing my experience doesn’t come off the wrong way. At the end of the day I’m just a guy who likes bikes and wants to travel and spread the passion with other people. I understand everyone sees the world through different lenses and at the end of the day good people should be able to empathize with and learn from each other’s experiences. I love all you guys and hope I can see you again someday soon!

It’s such a relief to have answers when you’re experiencing cardiac issues and sorry the journey has been rough. Waiting to be active again is hard but you will be back at it 100% in a snap! I don’t even notice my heart issues/meds when I MTB anymore, it took about 60 days on meds after full diagnosis. Wishing you a speedy recovery!

Glad to hear you got it figured out and have some sense of a plan to move forward. And super glad to hear you’ll be ok. I will say this I applaud your positivity given the situation. I would struggle severely with being positive about the situation of trying to do the right thing, but having it turn around and having my whole way of life changed due to an experimental drug. I hope these stories moving forward will be recorded and not censored as the campaign to remove stories like yours is telling and scary at the same time and makes me question everything. Keep it positive my friend!
