Musk identity CRISIS? Tesla’s Texas Gigafactory launches (questions)
Some 15,000 guests took part in the official opening of Tesla’s enormous new plant in Austin on Thursday – complete with a nightclub-esque Dogecoin drone show – as the electric carmaker continues its pivot away from California to Texas.
Tesla will receive over $60mn in tax breaks to build the “gigafactory” in the Republican state, where it now has its HQ, a move which some claim signals CEO Elon Musk is abandoning the liberal market that established his wealth.
“I think he is having a bit of an identity crisis and has forgotten who his customer is, and it is going to come back to bite him,” tech analyst Rob Enderle said of Musk. “He doesn’t seem to remember that most of the people who buy electric cars are the liberals.”
