The migrant crisis currently unfolding at the US-Mexico border has raised concerns among experts who believe that such a situation would not have been allowed to occur under any other administration except Joe Biden’s. Recent reports from the Department of Defense and the FBI have revealed over 100 instances of Chinese citizens posing as tourists to breach military bases. This comes as no surprise, considering previous reports of military-aged Chinese men with military-style haircuts lining up at the border. These individuals, suspected to be trained soldiers, are becoming increasingly audacious in their attempts to compromise US national security.
In a shocking incident, trained Chinese soldiers were discovered scuba diving in the vicinity of a Florida site regularly used by the US military for launching rockets. This display of audacity reflects the growing boldness of Chinese migrants attempting to cross into sensitive areas such as a missile range in New Mexico. At Fort Wainwright, Alaska, a group of Chinese nationals attempted to gain access to a military base by claiming to be tourists with hotel reservations. It has also been reported that some Chinese migrants strategically used Google Maps to identify the closest fast-food restaurants in proximity to military bases, indicating that they may have received specific training and targets.
The FBI, aware of the broader campaign of theft and influence by the Chinese government, has expressed its zero tolerance policy towards such activities. An FBI agent conveyed a strong message during an interview with Fox News: “The Chinese government is engaged in a broad, diverse campaign of theft and malign influence without regard to laws or international norms that the FBI will not tolerate… the FBI is committed to protecting our national security and defense information from the Chinese government’s actions and ultimately, their efforts to undermine our democracy and those who defend it.”
However, questions are being raised about the ability of law enforcement agencies to protect American citizens in the face of the ongoing migrant influx. While it is seemingly easy for the average individual to enter the US through the porous US-Mexico border, trained soldiers would have an even easier time bypassing the already weak security checkpoints. This raises concerns about national security, as the enemy is already believed to have infiltrated US soil and could potentially be planning their next attack. Critics argue that the US government is failing to take adequate measures to prevent such threats from materializing.
The current migrant crisis underscores the need for a comprehensive and robust border security strategy that addresses the vulnerabilities and threats posed by individuals attempting to breach US military sites. The fact that Chinese migrants have been able to successfully penetrate military bases is symptomatic of a larger problem that requires urgent attention and action. To safeguard national security and protect Americans, it is imperative that the government reevaluates its border security procedures, strengthens its intelligence capabilities, and enhances cooperation with defense and intelligence community partners, as well as state and local law enforcement agencies. Failure to do so may result in dire consequences for the nation’s democracy and those who defend it.
