Leaders all over the globe seem to be eager to use military force to settle matters, rather than seeking diplomatic solutions. The war in Ukraine shows no signs of ending peacefully, tensions between China and Taiwan are escalating, and there is a risk of a full-blown regional conflict in the Middle East. However, one war that is reportedly about to begin is taking place in western Africa, specifically in Niger. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), with the approval of the EU and the Biden administration, is preparing to invade Niger, and “D-Day” has already been chosen.
Abdel-Fatau Musah, the Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace & Security of ECOWAS, has announced that military forces are ready to go whenever the order is given for military intervention in Niger. The date for the invasion, “D-Day,” has been decided but not disclosed. Musah has also declared that his alliance will not tolerate any more coups in Niger and that they are putting a stop to it at this time.
However, the reasons behind the coup and the impending invasion are more complex than they appear. Niger has vast quantities of gold and uranium, which wealthy western nations have exploited for decades, while the majority of the population lives in poverty. The coup is popular among the people of Niger as they are tired of being exploited by France, their former colonial master. French interests in Niger have been the target of protests and attacks by supporters of the coup. As a result, the French government is deeply concerned about losing its ability to exploit Niger’s resources.
Unfortunately, these details are often overlooked by the mainstream news networks, which portray the coup leaders as bad and the upcoming invasion as necessary and just. The presence of over 1,000 US troops in Niger adds to the complexities of the situation.
Meanwhile, in Ukraine, the conflict continues to escalate. The Netherlands and Denmark have agreed to provide Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets, which will further provoke tensions between Ukraine and Russia. The Chinese military has also been practicing for a possible invasion of Taiwan, displaying their troops storming beaches in a video. A Chinese invasion of Taiwan would likely result in war between the US and China.
We are living in a time of wars and rumors of wars, but many people in the western world are unaware of the conflicts brewing around the globe. It is crucial to pay attention to these events because eventually, conflict will reach our doorstep. Diplomacy and peaceful solutions should always be the priority, rather than resorting to military force. As citizens, it is essential to stay informed and advocate for peaceful resolutions. Only by understanding and engaging with these issues can we hope to prevent further escalation and unnecessary bloodshed.
