According to reports, Ukrainian forces have launched cluster munitions into Donetsk city, causing damage to various civilian locations such as a private residence, a university, and other targets. This incident occurred on Saturday night when four rounds of 155mm cluster bombs were fired into the center of the city. The shelling ignited fires in three districts, as confirmed by the Joint Center of Control and Coordination (JCCC) for the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR).
It has been stated that the cluster munitions exploded in the air, resulting in significant damage. The Donetsk University of Economics and Trade was one of the affected buildings, and the Mayor of Donetsk, Alexei Kulemzin, acknowledged the ensuing fire in a post on the messaging platform Telegram. Additionally, several apartment buildings also caught fire as a result of the shelling.
These recent attacks follow another devastating Ukrainian bombardment on Monday, which led to the death of at least three individuals and injured ten others. The JCCC also reported the killing of a civilian in a nearby town due to the shelling.
Notably, cluster munitions have been banned in more than 100 countries due to their harmful impact on civilians. These shells are typically designed to open midair and disperse numerous submunitions over a wide area, saturating it with explosives. However, these weapons often have a high failure rate, leaving unexploded submunitions that pose a risk to civilians long after the conflict has ended, sometimes for decades.
