Connecticut State Lawmaker Attacked after Muslim Prayer Service, Suspect Detained

HARTFORD, Conn.—In a shocking incident, a Connecticut state lawmaker was targeted and assaulted shortly after leaving a Muslim prayer service. Thanks to the quick action of a fellow worshiper, the assailant was apprehended until law enforcement arrived at the scene.

On the morning of June 28 outside the XL Center, an arena in downtown Hartford, Rep. Mayram Khan found herself under attack as she was leaving the venue with her sister and children after attending a prayer service. The event, attended by approximately 4,000 people, was held to mark Eid al-Adha, a significant Islamic festival that commemorates the end of the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca.

According to Farhan Memon, the chair of the Connecticut chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the attacker approached Khan and began making vulgar remarks before physically assaulting her. The assailant grabbed her, struck her, and forcefully threw her to the ground. Khan sustained minor cuts and bruises from the assault.

However, the situation took a swift turn when a brave worshiper decided to intervene. The Good Samaritan, whose identity remains unknown, chased down the attacker and managed to detain him until local law enforcement arrived at the scene. The suspect was identified as 30-year-old Andrey Desmond, hailing from New Britain. Desmond was promptly taken into custody and has since been charged with assault, unlawful restraint, breach of peace, and interfering with police. Authorities are still investigating whether Desmond was aware that Khan is a legislator, leaving room for additional charges to be filed.

Desmond appeared before a judge on Thursday for his arraignment. At this time, no plea has been entered on his behalf. It remains to be seen what defense strategy, if any, will be employed by his legal counsel.

Mayram Khan, a Democrat from Windsor, became a prominent figure in Connecticut politics after winning a special election for a seat in the Connecticut House in March 2022. However, she has chosen not to provide immediate comments regarding the incident, as she has yet to respond to phone calls and email messages.

The assault on Rep. Khan has sparked concerns within both the Muslim community and the political sphere. Leaders of various organizations, including the Council on American-Islamic Relations, have condemned the attack as an act of bigotry and intolerance. They emphasize the need for collective efforts to combat such incidents and promote a society that values inclusivity and mutual respect.

This incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of fostering a safe and accepting environment for all individuals, regardless of their religious beliefs or political affiliations. It is crucial to support victims of such hate crimes and work towards a society that rejects violence and prejudice.

Law enforcement agencies continue to investigate the assault case, employing all available resources to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the incident. As the investigation progresses, more details may emerge, shedding further light on the motives behind the attack.
