A tragic and unnecessary death has occurred in Sudbury, Ontario as a result of strict COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Garnet Harper, a 35-year-old happily married father of five, passed away due to complications from prolonged dialysis after being denied a referral for an organ transplant because he was unvaccinated.
Garnet’s death in May of this year, just weeks before his 36th birthday, could have been avoided if he had been placed on the organ transplant list. Both of his brothers were willing to donate organs to assist him, but he was denied a referral to the London Health Science Centre (LHSC) Multi-Organ Transplant Program. The denial came in the form of an email from Peggy Kittmer, a former registered nurse turned Transplant Coordinator for the LHSC, who earned a salary just under $109,000 in 2022, funded by taxpayers.
Meghan Harper, Garnet’s wife, describes his death as needless and senseless. According to the LHSC’s COVID-19 vaccination information resource for transplant recipients, the Multi-Organ Transplant Program in London requires individuals to have received at least two doses of an approved COVID-19 vaccine before being listed for transplant. The resource also recommends one to two booster shots.
The FAQ section of the resource indicates that exemptions to vaccination are considered, including cases where vaccination is not possible or when recipients are too ill to be vaccinated and in need of an immediate transplant. Children are not required to be vaccinated to be listed for transplant. However, in Kittmer’s email denying Garnet’s referral, she stated that there were no medical or surgical exemptions to receiving the vaccine.
Rebel News reached out to Kittmer and LHSC media relations for clarification on this discrepancy, but a direct response has not been received. Steve Robinson, Senior Media Relations Consultant, mentioned that Kittmer was aware of the inquiry and that they would respond as soon as possible. However, no response has been received.
Garnet’s tragic death highlights the devastating consequences of strict vaccine mandates. The enforcement of these mandates prevented him from receiving the organ transplant he desperately needed, ultimately costing him his life. It raises questions about the fairness and consistency of these policies, especially in cases where medical exemptions should be considered. The lack of transparency and clear communication from the LHSC adds to the frustration and confusion surrounding this tragic situation.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a reminder of the urgent need for a comprehensive and compassionate approach to public health policies. While vaccines play a crucial role in managing the spread of COVID-19, it is essential to consider individual circumstances and medical exemptions to ensure that no one is unjustly deprived of life-saving medical treatments. The tragedy of Garnet Harper’s death should prompt a reevaluation of vaccine policies to prevent similar injustices from occurring in the future.
