German MEP Christine Anderson has criticized Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for honoring a former Ukrainian Waffen-SS fighter, Yaroslav Hunka, in Canada’s House of Commons. Last Friday, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky present, the Speaker of the House acknowledged Hunka, noting that he fought against the Russians during World War II. All 338 members of Parliament then gave Hunka a standing ovation.

After the ceremony, Speaker of the House Anthony Rota admitted that he had invited Hunka to the House without informing other Parliamentarians. He has since resigned from his position. Christine Anderson, a member of Germany’s Alternative for Deutschland party, has been critical of Trudeau in the past and is now speaking out against the celebration of a former Nazi in the Canadian Parliament.

In a video posted on social media, Anderson called on Trudeau and other Members of Parliament who applauded Hunka to hold themselves accountable to the same standard they apply to others. She demanded that Trudeau step down and resign, along with any MPs who praised a Nazi. Anderson previously visited Canada where she met with three Conservative MPs. She plans to return later this year for another tour.

Trudeau responded to Anderson’s criticism by accusing Conservative parliamentarians of associating themselves with hateful rhetoric and intolerance. He called for greater accountability and disassociation from such rhetoric within the Conservative Party.

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre also condemned Anderson’s views as “vile” and “racist.” He defended his party against Trudeau’s accusations and insisted that they do not tolerate hateful rhetoric.

The controversy surrounding the honoring of Hunka has raised questions about the vetting process for guests at official parliamentary events. It has also sparked a broader debate about accountability and responsibility within Canadian politics.

Trudeau has yet to personally apologize for the embarrassment caused by honoring a former Nazi SS officer in Parliament. The incident has further fueled the ongoing criticism of his leadership and has led to calls for his resignation.

In light of the controversy, the Canadian public is demanding greater transparency and accountability from their government. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of thoroughly vetting and scrutinizing individuals who receive official recognition in order to avoid honoring individuals with dark histories.

As the fallout from this incident continues, there is a growing expectation that the Canadian government will take steps to address the issue and prevent such incidents from happening in the future. The public is looking to their leaders to acknowledge their mistakes, apologize, and implement measures that ensure the appropriate vetting and honoring of individuals in official capacities. Only then can they begin to rebuild trust and confidence in the political system.
