Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Chris Clark, has threatened to put President Joe Biden on the witness stand if federal charges are filed against Hunter Biden, according to a letter reviewed by Politico. The 32-page letter, written in October 2022, warned that President Biden, also known as “The Big Guy” or “Robert L. Peters,” could be called as a witness in his son’s trial.
The letter, which also includes more than 300 pages of previously undisclosed emails and documents, provides insight into the negotiations for a potential plea deal that would have resolved Hunter Biden’s legal issues, including charges related to the illegal purchase of a gun and failure to pay taxes. This deal could have also protected him from future prosecution by a Republican-led Justice Department.
In late July, Hunter Biden appeared in court in Delaware to agree to a plea deal proposed by the Biden Department of Justice. The deal would have allowed him to avoid prison time for the gun charge and would have addressed his tax fraud misdemeanors. However, the plea deal fell apart when the judge rejected the prosecutors’ request for immunity from future charges.
Federal prosecutors recently stated that plea negotiations with Hunter Biden have reached an impasse, and they expect the case to go to trial. The prosecutors argue that the venue for the tax-related charges is either in California or Washington, D.C., not Delaware. They believe that a trial is necessary now that the plea negotiations have failed.
On Friday, the Delaware judge dismissed Hunter Biden’s tax charges. However, it is expected that he will face similar charges in either D.C. or California, as U.S. Attorney from Delaware, Dave Weiss, has been appointed as a special counsel.
The threat to put President Biden on the witness stand showcases the potentially significant impact that Hunter Biden’s legal troubles could have on his father’s presidency. If the president were called as a witness, it would undoubtedly create a high-stakes political and legal situation.
The leaked information about the potential charges against Hunter Biden in 2022 sparked controversy, as his lawyer argued that it was an illegal leak and that any prosecution would be seen as politically motivated. The lawyer also suggested that the charges might even violate the Second Amendment.
While the circumstances surrounding Hunter Biden’s legal issues continue to unfold, it remains to be seen how the developments will impact his father’s presidency and the broader political landscape. The potential trial and ongoing legal battles will undoubtedly be closely watched by both political supporters and opponents.
