Police in Omaha, Nebraska, have made a disturbing discovery at the home of a man suspected of committing a homicide and carjacking. The authorities found a “hit list” belonging to the suspect, Matthew Briggs, who was killed by police in western Iowa over the weekend.
Upon investigating the stolen car driven by Briggs, officials discovered two guns. Detectives then proceeded to search his residence in Papillion, Nebraska, where they stumbled upon a list containing the names of Briggs’ ex-girlfriends and the victim of the homicide. The Omaha Police Department released a statement on Thursday, but did not provide further details about the contents of the list.
The search for Briggs began after reports surfaced that he was involved in a series of violent crimes. Early on Saturday, he allegedly broke into the home of one of his ex-girlfriends and attacked her. Shortly after this incident, another report emerged indicating that Briggs had driven his car through the garage door of a different ex-girlfriend’s house. Although the woman was not home at the time, Briggs shot at a neighbor who had come over to check on him. Luckily, the neighbor escaped unharmed.
Later that day, investigators discovered the body of 52-year-old Steven Donsbach in his Omaha residence. They believe Briggs was responsible for shooting and killing him. Mr. Donsbach’s name was among those included on the hit list found at Briggs’ residence.
As authorities continued searching for Briggs, they received a report of an armed carjacking in west Omaha, committed by an individual matching Briggs’ description. Officers spotted the stolen vehicle and initiated a pursuit that crossed state lines, reaching Council Bluffs, Iowa.
During the pursuit, two officers—one from Omaha and one from Council Bluffs—confronted Briggs after he crashed the stolen car. Police assert that Briggs brandished a firearm at the officers, prompting them to shoot him. Briggs was immediately transported to an Omaha hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Following protocol in cases of officer-involved shootings, the officers responsible have been placed on paid leave. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation will conduct an investigation into the shooting.
Matthew Briggs’ case is a sobering reminder of the dangers posed by individuals who engage in violent and criminal behavior. The discovery of a hit list at his residence raises concerns about the potential for other victims and the motivations driving Briggs’ actions.
