The search for a new Speaker of the House of Representatives is intensifying, with Republicans actively seeking a strong candidate to lead. Some individuals are even considering joining the race as it enters a crucial stage with the upcoming candidate forum on Monday.
One potential contender being mentioned is former Congressman Devin Nunes from California. Nunes is a prominent ally of former President Trump and currently serves as the CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group, the company responsible for TRUTH Social. Nunes has a history of standing by Trump, as demonstrated during his tenure as House Intelligence Committee Chairman. In March 2017, Nunes revealed that the Obama Administration had conducted surveillance on Trump and his transition team prior to his inauguration. In a recent appearance on OANN, Nunes called for a thorough investigation of the individuals involved in the Trump-Russia collusion hoax and emphasized the need for them to be held accountable through trials and public exposure.
The absence of a House Speaker has been a lingering issue for over two weeks now, ever since Matt Gaetz filed a motion to vacate the chair. Kevin McCarthy was removed from his role as House Speaker in a vote that ended with 216-210 in favor of his ousting. Notably, eight Republicans voted against McCarthy: Biggs, Buck, Burchett, Crane, Gaetz, Good, Mace, and Rosendale.
Last week saw three unsuccessful attempts to elect Rep. Jim Jordan as Speaker, followed by a secret ballot vote to determine whether Jordan should remain the GOP nominee. Unfortunately, by a significant margin of 122-86, Jordan was stripped of his nomination as the party’s candidate for Speaker. This outcome was considered a betrayal by many Republican voters, as the identities of the lawmakers who opposed Jordan were shielded by the secrecy of their ballots.
In an act of defiance against the Republican establishment, nine GOP lawmakers have now announced their candidacy for House Speaker after the revolt against Jordan by more moderate Republicans. This development further complicates the race for Speaker and highlights the divisions within the party.
Kash Patel, a former Department of Defense Chief of Staff and Deputy Director of National Intelligence under President Trump, recently shared a photo of Nunes discussing the prolonged absence of a Speaker of the House on Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo show. Patel posed the question to his followers on Truth Social, the social media platform associated with Trump Media & Technology Group, asking them how “Speaker Nunes” sounds.
