A tragic incident unfolded in Rutland, Vermont, as a burglary suspect led police on a high-speed chase that resulted in the death of a young police officer and injuries to two others. Tate Rheaume, the 20-year-old suspect, is now set to be arraigned on charges related to the crash, including grossly negligent operation and attempting to elude, both with death resulting. Additional charges may also be brought against him, according to state police.
The fatal crash occurred as police were pursuing Rheaume’s vehicle, following his suspected involvement in an attempted break-in at a residence. Evidence suggests that Rheaume crossed the center line and collided head-on with Rutland City Police Officer Jessica Ebbighausen’s cruiser. The suspect’s truck also collided with another police cruiser. Tragically, Officer Ebbighausen, who was not wearing a seat belt at the time, lost her life in the crash.
After the crash, both Rheaume and the two injured officers were rushed to Rutland Regional Medical Center. Rheaume’s injuries were severe enough to warrant his transfer to the University of Vermont Medical Center in Burlington, where he remained in serious but stable condition at the time of reporting. One of the injured officers was released from the hospital on the same day of the crash, and the other was discharged the following day.
To honor Officer Ebbighausen’s service and sacrifice, a touching procession took place. After an autopsy was conducted on Saturday, a group of nearly three dozen law enforcement officers and first responders escorted her body from the medical examiner’s office in Burlington back to Rutland. This somber event served as a reminder of the risks that officers take every day to protect their communities. Ms. Ebbighausen had been a part-time officer with the Rutland City Police Department since May and had been scheduled to undergo training in August to become a full-time officer.
This heartbreaking incident once again highlights the dangers that law enforcement officers face in the line of duty. Despite the risks involved, officers continue to bravely serve and protect their communities. The loss of Officer Ebbighausen is a tragic reminder of the sacrifices made by these dedicated individuals.
As the legal proceedings unfold, Vermont residents and the law enforcement community are left grappling with the repercussions of this devastating event. The arraignment of Tate Rheaume will shed further light on the circumstances surrounding the crash and determine the legal consequences he will face. The lasting impact of this incident will undoubtedly be felt by Officer Ebbighausen’s family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the community she served.
