House Speaker Kevin McCarthy has announced a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, directing House committees to investigate allegations of corruption and misconduct. However, there have been no subpoenas issued to Hunter Biden, the son of President Biden, which has drawn criticism from many. McCarthy appeared on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures” and faced tough questioning from host Maria Bartiromo about the lack of subpoenas.
Bartiromo raised the issue of the impeachment inquiry and asked McCarthy why Hunter Biden has not been subpoenaed yet, especially considering that Donald Trump Jr. was questioned for 20 hours despite a lack of evidence against him. McCarthy deflected the question and pointed to other Republicans like Jim Jordan, indicating that it is up to the committees to decide when to issue the subpoenas.
Bartiromo continued to push McCarthy on the issue, highlighting the evidence of Hunter Biden’s alleged influence-peddling scheme involving his father found on the infamous “laptop from hell.” Despite the evidence, McCarthy did not provide a clear answer on when Hunter Biden would be subpoenaed, causing further frustration and skepticism.
This lack of action regarding Hunter Biden has not gone unnoticed by other members of Congress. Representative Matt Gaetz expressed his dissatisfaction with Speaker McCarthy and even threatened to remove him from his position for failing to comply with an agreement that allowed him to become Speaker of the House. Gaetz reminded McCarthy of the power held by any member of Congress to initiate a “motion to vacate” and force a vote on removing the Speaker.
Gaetz criticized McCarthy for various reasons, including not holding a vote on term limits, withholding the full January 6 tapes, insufficient accountability for the Biden family, and supporting Biden’s spending plans. He also voiced his frustration over the failure to subpoena Hunter Biden, echoing the concerns raised by Bartiromo.
It remains to be seen when or if Hunter Biden will be subpoenaed as part of the impeachment inquiry. The lack of action on this front raises questions about the seriousness of the investigation and fuels suspicions of political motivations. As the pressure mounts on Speaker McCarthy, it will be interesting to see how he responds and whether he can satisfy those calling for accountability and transparency.
