GOP Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy is under fire from conservative members of the House Freedom Caucus, who are accusing him of failing to uphold his promises and working with Democrats. The Freedom Caucus, led by Rep. Matt Gaetz, has voiced its support for removing McCarthy from his position should he continue to cave to Democrat resistance during the ongoing budget battle in Congress.
McCarthy responded to these accusations by claiming that Gaetz is colluding with Democrat Rep. Eric Swalwell to initiate a motion to vacate his speakership. McCarthy dismissed complaints about his broken campaign promises and suggested that Gaetz is pursuing his removal because McCarthy refuses to involve himself in an old ethics complaint filed against Gaetz by Democrats in the previous Congress.
In separate interviews, McCarthy reiterated his claims against Gaetz and Swalwell. He stated that Gaetz’s concerns stem from the ethics complaint and accused him of seeking Swalwell’s assistance to push for a motion to vacate. McCarthy emphasized that he will not intervene in an independent ethics committee and will not reinstate Swalwell on the intelligence committee, regardless of the actions taken against him.
These accusations from McCarthy come after Gaetz responded to a post by Swalwell, in which Swalwell downplayed the seriousness of the motion to vacate threats. Gaetz questioned how many Democratic votes against McCarthy Swalwell could gather if the motion were filed. Swalwell did not provide an answer, and some media outlets speculate that Democrats may actually support McCarthy if a motion to vacate is initiated.
Contrary to McCarthy’s claims, several members of the House Freedom Caucus have shown their support for the motion to vacate. Rep. Bob Good from Virginia and Rep. Eli Crane from Arizona have recently indicated that they would vote to remove McCarthy if the motion is brought forward.
This internal conflict within the Republican Party poses a challenge for McCarthy. He is facing criticism from conservative members who feel he has not fulfilled his promises and is too willing to cooperate with Democrats. The Freedom Caucus’s support for the motion to vacate reflects a growing discontent within the party and a desire for new leadership.
As the budget battle continues on Capitol Hill, the fate of McCarthy’s speakership hangs in the balance. Whether he can regain the trust and support of his party members remains uncertain. Only time will tell if McCarthy will be able to weather this storm and hold onto his position as Speaker of the House.
