Canada’s Emergency Preparedness Minister, Bill Blair, expects a significant request for help from the province of British Columbia as wildfires continue to worsen. The government operations center has been engaged in discussions with British Columbia over the past few days, and the formal request for assistance is expected to be made today. In response, the Canadian government is prepared to deploy the necessary resources.
The requested assistance is anticipated to include military support for airlift evacuations from remote areas. Additionally, members of the military who are trained as firefighters will offer support in “mop up” operations to prevent the re-ignition of extinguished blazes. The Canadian Coast Guard is also mobilizing resources to aid the affected coastal communities. Natural Resources Canada staff, equipped with forest management expertise, are also preparing to provide assistance.
Furthermore, Parks Canada is ready to support British Columbia by deploying park firefighters and forest management specialists. Blair notes that British Columbia is one of the better-equipped provinces to handle wildfires due to its regular experience with such incidents. However, any additional assistance required will be made available.
As of now, there are over 350 wildfires burning across the province, exerting enormous pressure on fire crews. The BC Wildfire Service warns that the upcoming heatwave could exacerbate the situation in many areas, adding further strain on the already overstretched teams.
While a week-old, 300-square-kilometer wildfire near Highway 37 just south of the Yukon boundary has remained relatively calm, there is concern that it, along with similar fires in northern British Columbia, may escalate with the anticipated hot weather during the next few days.
