In an exclusive interview with CNN, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky affirmed that he “cannot imagine” Ukraine without the Crimean peninsula and stated that any scenario without reclaiming it would not be considered a victory for Kiev. Zelensky’s remarks emphasize the ongoing tension and conflict between Ukraine and Russia, with the Crimean peninsula at the center of the dispute.

Zelensky firmly asserted that as long as Crimea remains under Russian occupation, the war is not over. He argued that achieving peace in Ukraine is impossible without somehow seizing the peninsula. For Zelensky, victory would only be achieved when Crimea is returned to Ukraine. This sentiment aligns with the repeated promises made by top Ukrainian officials to take back Crimea from Russia.

Not surprisingly, Moscow condemned Zelensky’s remarks and accused his regime of having a “Nazi essence.” This response from the Russian government reflects their longstanding opposition to Ukraine’s stance on Crimea. The Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, criticized Zelensky’s regime for imposing a water blockade on Crimea and threatening to persecute its residents for collaborating with Russia. She referred to Zelensky as the “little Kiev Napoleon,” drawing attention to his former career as a comedian and implying that he is a figure reminiscent of French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte.

The conflict over Crimea began following the 2014 Maidan coup in Ukraine, which led to the ousting of democratically-elected President Viktor Yanukovich. Soon after, Crimea broke away from Ukraine and joined Russia, with the majority of its population showing support for reunification through a referendum. Since then, Ukraine has sought to regain control of the peninsula, considering it a priority issue in their political discourse.

The tensions between Ukraine and Russia over Crimea have persisted for years, with no resolution in sight. Zelensky’s strong stance on Crimea reflects the sentiments shared by many Ukrainian officials and reinforces the ongoing conflict between the two nations. The dispute over Crimea continues to shape Ukraine’s political landscape and its relationship with Russia.

In conclusion, President Zelensky’s interview with CNN revealed his unwavering determination to reclaim the Crimean peninsula. He underscored that Ukraine cannot imagine itself without Crimea and that peace would not be achieved until it is returned to Ukrainian control. The response from Russia, which condemned his remarks, highlights the deep divide between the two nations on this issue. The conflict over Crimea remains a significant challenge for both Ukraine and Russia, shaping their political dynamics and influencing their bilateral relations.
