North Korea has unveiled its new “tactical attack submarine” with nuclear missile capabilities, marking a significant development in the country’s military advancements. The state’s official Korean Central News Agency reported the launch of the submarine, which North Korean leader Kim Jong-un believes will elevate the nation to the status of an “advanced maritime power.”
Named the “Hero Kim Kun Ok,” the submarine made its debut during a military event attended by Kim Jong-un and high-ranking defense officials. According to Al Jazeera, once operational, the submarine will play a crucial role in North Korea’s naval defense strategy, highlighting the country’s commitment to modernizing its navy and reinforcing its nuclear capabilities.
During the event, Kim Jong-un praised the scientists, researchers, and workers involved in the project, emphasizing their contribution to North Korea’s maritime ambitions. He also took the opportunity to inspect the new submarine personally and familiarize himself with its weapon systems and underwater capabilities. The Korean Central News Agency confirmed that the submarine will join the East Sea Fleet.
However, North Korea’s ambitions do not stop there. Kim Jong-un revealed plans to retrofit existing submarines to carry atomic weapons, describing it as an “immediate objective.” This announcement comes shortly after the United States decided to station a nuclear submarine off South Korea’s coast, a move that has not been made since 1981. While the US cited “provocations” as the reason for the deployment, North Korea warned that such actions could escalate into a severe nuclear conflict.
Tensions between the US and North Korea have been escalating, with the US conducting regular military drills alongside South Korean and Japanese allies. In response, North Korea has carried out multiple weapons tests, including the launch of intercontinental ballistic missiles, while condemning the US-led exercises as preparations for invasion.
To address the growing concerns, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have voiced their unease regarding North Korea’s missile activities. They have announced increased collaboration in missile surveillance and joint training sessions in an effort to deter potential aggression.
The unveiling of the new nuclear-capable submarine marks a significant milestone for North Korea, showcasing its determination to strengthen its military capabilities. The international community will closely monitor the situation, as any escalation in tensions could have far-reaching implications for regional stability. It remains to be seen how this development will impact international diplomatic efforts to address North Korea’s weapons program and achieve lasting peace in the Korean Peninsula.
