According to a survey conducted by the New York Post and Leger after the GOP presidential debate, President Trump emerged as the clear favorite, overshadowing his closest primary rival, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, with a staggering 61 percent compared to DeSantis’s meager 9 percent. In a hypothetical general election matchup against Joe Biden, Trump maintained his lead with 44 percent, while Biden trailed closely behind at 41 percent.
Contrary to popular belief, the poll results also dismiss the notion that Democrat prosecutors at the federal and state levels are pursuing case after case against Trump to aid his nomination as the Republican candidate, only to set him up for a defeat in the general election. The survey revealed that a mere three percent of Democrats surveyed desired Trump to secure the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Instead, former Rep. Liz Cheney received the highest support with 16 percent, followed by former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie with 11 percent.
The poll was conducted over two days, from Wednesday night to Thursday, and included a total of 1,800 online respondents who were 18 years of age or older. Out of this sample group, 534 individuals watched the Republican Primary Debate. The margin of error for the poll was reported to be 2.3 percent. Among the registered Republican voters surveyed, 658 participants provided their preferences.
Among the Republicans who watched all or parts of the debate, 23 percent believed that Ohio businessman Vivek Ramaswamy emerged as the winner, closely followed by 21 percent who favored Governor Ron DeSantis.
The results of the survey, specifically for the 658 Republican voters, revealed their preferences for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination. Trump secured a commanding lead with 61 percent, while DeSantis lagged far behind with only 9 percent. Other candidates like Ramaswamy, Pence, and Scott received 5 percent each, while Haley, Christie, Cheney, and Hurd garnered smaller percentages or zero support. Interestingly, 2 percent of respondents selected “Someone else,” and 14 percent remained unsure.
A particularly intriguing aspect of the poll was Trump’s popularity among young adults within the GOP. Among those aged 18 to 34, Trump garnered a strong 58 percent support, with Pence, DeSantis, Ramaswamy, and “Someone else” receiving 6 percent each. However, a significant portion, 12 percent, were uncertain about their preferred candidate.
In the hypothetical general election scenario among the 18-34 age group, Trump maintained a steady lead with 48 percent support, outperforming Biden who received 34 percent. Notably, 17 percent of respondents within this demographic preferred an alternative candidate. In terms of gender, Trump retained his lead among men, securing 47 percent compared to Biden’s 41 percent. Among women, the two candidates were tied at 41 percent each.
These poll results indicate President Trump’s overwhelming popularity among Republicans, outshining his primary rival Ron DeSantis and maintaining a competitive edge over Joe Biden. As the 2024 presidential race approaches, these findings shed light on the preferences of GOP voters, highlighting Trump’s continued influence within the party and the potential challenges that lie ahead for his competitors.
