The Queensland Government is reportedly planning to implement additional restrictions on shooters in the state, according to information provided by government employees involved in the matter. These proposed restrictions include stricter storage requirements, which may be challenging for renters and many homeowners to meet, as well as broader interpretations of the “not a fit and proper person” criteria in order to reduce the number of firearms license holders.

Industry representative groups, including Shooters Union, SIFA, the Queensland Firearms Dealers Association, and AgForce, have written twice to Police Minister Mark Ryan requesting clarification on these proposed changes. They have urged the Minister to either deny that such changes are under discussion or, if they are being planned, to involve the industry and law-abiding firearms users in the decision-making process. However, they have not received any response from the Palaszczuk Government, indicating that something may indeed be happening behind the scenes.

In response to the lack of communication from the government, Shooters Union has launched a campaign to remind MPs that they work for the people, not the other way around. The president of Shooters Union, Graham Park, has released a video explaining how individuals can get involved in the campaign and what the organization hopes to achieve. The video urges viewers to share the campaign with everyone they know, whether they are Shooters Union members or not.

The firearms industry and law-abiding firearms users believe it is crucial to be included in discussions surrounding any changes to legislation that would affect them. They want to ensure that their voices are heard and that their perspectives are taken into account. By involving industry representative groups and consulting with law-abiding firearms users, the government can ensure that any proposed restrictions are fair, reasonable, and effective in achieving their intended goals.

It is important for the government to strike a balance between public safety and the rights of law-abiding firearms users. Access to firearms is a deeply sensitive issue, with proponents arguing for the right to self-defense, sport shooting, and rural pest control, while opponents express concerns about potential misuse and the need for strict regulation.

In light of these discussions, it is crucial for the government to maintain transparency and engage in open dialogue with stakeholders. By actively involving industry representatives and seeking input from firearms users, policymakers can ensure that any proposed changes are based on comprehensive knowledge of the issues at hand and are supported by evidence-based reasoning.

As this issue unfolds, it is important for individuals to stay informed and actively participate in the democratic process. By engaging with their local MPs and sharing their concerns, law-abiding firearms users can make their voices heard and influence the decision-making process. The government has a responsibility to consider the perspectives of all stakeholders and work towards a balanced and fair approach that respects the rights and concerns of all individuals involved.
