The belief in God among Americans is declining at a steady pace, following a trend seen in Western European countries. According to a recent survey by Gallup, the percentage of Americans who believe in God has reached its lowest recorded level. While a majority of Americans still believe in God, the numbers are decreasing year after year. The decline is not specific to God alone, as belief in other religious entities like angels, heaven, hell, and the devil has also decreased.
The survey revealed that about 74% of Americans believe in God, which may sound high, but it is important to note that this includes people from various religious backgrounds. The overall belief in God has fallen by 16 points since 2001, which is a significant drop in just over two decades.
The decline in belief is also reflected in the decreasing attendance at religious services. Another Gallup survey found that church attendance has dropped by approximately 10 points since 2012. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, an average of 34% of U.S. adults said they had attended a religious service in the past week. However, since 2020, the average has decreased to 30%. These attendance levels are nearly 10 percentage points lower than what was measured in 2012.
The loss of faith in organized religion can be attributed to various factors, one of which is the exposure of clergy members engaging in scandalous activities. Media coverage often highlights stories of religious leaders committing crimes, which erode the trust and confidence people have in religious institutions. One recent example is an executive pastor from New Hampshire who was sentenced to prison for embezzling funds from his church to cover gambling debts.
Additionally, traditional Christian values are losing favor among young adults. A recent survey found that two out of five young adults believe that marriage is an outdated tradition. Moreover, 85% of them believe that a fulfilling and committed relationship does not require marriage. The declining belief in marriage is more common among women, with 52% sharing this view compared to 41% of men.
These trends are concerning for the future of society. The values on which the nation was founded are being questioned and rejected. On the other hand, the demographic shift among national leaders illustrates the direction America is heading. At Yale University, 29% of the student body identifies as LGBTQ+. Harvard is also experiencing an increase in non-straight students, with the class of 2025 projected to have a 29% non-straight population.
The shift towards a society that strays from its founding principles is a cause for alarm. It is essential for the country to experience a “great awakening” to reverse these trends before it is too late. The uncertainty of life should remind us that our time is limited, and we should not live as if there will be no consequences. Sudden shocks and unexpected events can change everything in an instant.

It is crucial for individuals to reflect on their beliefs and reconsider the role of faith in their lives. A society that rejects its spiritual foundations will face dire consequences. A shift in mindset and a return to faith are necessary if we hope to navigate the challenges that lie ahead.
