Representative Mike Johnson of Louisiana’s 4th District has been elected as the GOP Speaker-Designate in a closed-door voting session among House Republicans. This decision comes after a series of announced candidates for the Speakership of the House.
The initial list of candidates for the Speakership included Byron Donalds from Florida, Chuck Fleischmann from Tennessee, Mark Green from Tennessee, Mike Johnson from Louisiana, and Roger Williams from Texas. However, Tom Emmer from Minnesota, who was previously associated with a Soros-funded group, withdrew from the race.
In the final round of voting, Mike Johnson emerged as the winner with 128 votes, while Byron Donalds received 29 votes. With this victory, Johnson becomes the fourth Speaker-Designate for the House, following in the footsteps of Tom Emmer, Jim Jordan, and Steve Scalise.
After being designated as the GOP speaker nominee, Johnson held a press conference where he emphasized the importance of unity within the Republican Party. In a powerful speech, he highlighted the significance of serving the people and restoring their faith in Congress and the government. He cited Abraham Lincoln and Ronald Reagan to reinforce the notion that America is the last best hope for mankind.
Johnson assured the public that the House Republican majority stands united and is committed to governing effectively. He mentioned their priorities, including supporting their ally Israel, addressing the world’s challenges, and passing appropriations bills. Johnson pledged to serve the American people well and expressed confidence that their dedication would be rewarded in the upcoming elections.
However, during the press conference, a reporter questioned Johnson about his involvement in challenging the 2020 election results. The reporter’s inquiry was swiftly dismissed by other Republicans present at the conference, with Representative Virginia Foxx of North Carolina telling the reporter to “shut up.”
It is worth mentioning that Representative Johnson played a significant role in challenging the 2020 election results. He spearheaded the drafting of an amicus brief, signed by 125 House Republicans, in support of a Texas lawsuit seeking to invalidate the election results in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Michigan, and Wisconsin.
In December 2020, President Trump reached out to Johnson to express his appreciation for the amicus brief. This demonstrates Johnson’s commitment to his stance on the election and his ongoing support from influential figures within the party.
Rep. Mike Johnson’s election as the GOP Speaker-Designate signifies a turning point for the Republican Party, as they prepare to lead the House. Johnson’s call for unity and his pledge to serve the American people with integrity sets the stage for a new era of governance in Congress. With his leadership, Republicans aim to address pressing issues and restore trust in the government as they work towards a better future for the country.
