A video has emerged showing the use of drones in trench warfare, which has become a defining characteristic of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The footage, shared by RT correspondent Igor Zhdanov, captures Russian artillery strikes on Ukrainian positions with the aid of real-time intelligence provided by UAV operators.
Filmed from the air, the video shows Ukrainian trenches and shelters in forest terrain being repeatedly bombarded by 152mm shells. The troops attempt to relocate and carry their wounded, but the strikes continue to follow them. In one instance, a man is seen fleeing a fortified position after it is hit.
It is noteworthy that the availability of inexpensive drones to both sides of the conflict has significantly impacted their military capabilities. These drones provide real-time surveillance, making it increasingly difficult to execute tactical surprises. Additionally, the threat posed by kamikaze drones makes it risky to gather heavy weaponry near the front lines. As a result, the hostilities often degenerate into artillery-intensive positional warfare, reminiscent of the tactics employed during World War I.
The video appears to be part of a series produced by Amur, a Chechen commando unit currently deployed in the Lugansk People’s Republic. This unit showcases examples of drone warfare in the Serebryanka forest, located around 20km west of the city of Severodonetsk and encompassed by the Seversky Donets River.
According to the Chechens, their primary adversaries are members of the Azov Brigade, a Ukrainian national guard unit. The Azov Brigade initially began as a volunteer Ukrainian nationalist force with close ties to far-right groups around the world. However, Azov’s leadership has since distanced themselves from the use of Nazi symbols that were initially associated with the unit.
The use of drones in this ongoing conflict has transformed the dynamics of warfare in the region. Drone technology provides both sides with the ability to gather real-time intelligence and launch surprise attacks, making traditional tactics less effective. Moreover, the availability of inexpensive drones has leveled the playing field, giving both sides access to advanced surveillance capabilities.
This development underscores the importance of technological advancements in modern warfare and the need for nations to adapt their strategies accordingly. As drones continue to evolve and become more accessible, they are likely to play an increasingly significant role in future conflicts. It remains to be seen how this will impact not only the Ukraine conflict but also conflicts worldwide.
