The lower house of the Russian parliament is considering passing a legislation that would grant certain privileges to ‘volunteers’ fighting in Ukraine, according to Izvestiya newspaper. This legislation, proposed by the ruling United Russia party, aims to equalize the legal status of service members and those who have signed contracts with the Rosgvardia paramilitary units. Currently, members of the Russian military serving in the conflict zone already enjoy similar privileges.
If the legislation is passed, these ‘volunteers’ will be exempted from income tax, similar to Russian servicemen. Additionally, they will not be charged fees for issuing passports and driver’s licenses. The Russian government has already expressed its readiness to support the initiative, as reported by Izvestiya.
Anatoly Vyborny, one of the co-authors of the bill, highlighted that this measure would help strengthen the fighting spirit of the defenders of the motherland.
The proposal has received support from all three other parties present in the State Duma. Oleg Nilov from the Spravedlivaya Rossiya (Just Russia) party emphasized the need for more substantial assistance to be provided to veterans, suggesting that their status be equalized with that of WWII veterans.
Sergey Leonov from the Liberal Democratic Party of Russia (LDPR) stated that his party would support any legislation aimed at supporting those fighting in Ukraine. Nikolay Arefiev, a representative of the Communist Party, mentioned that the proposed tax exemption would be an effective measure to support the families of these volunteers.
By granting these privileges to ‘volunteers’ fighting in Ukraine, the Russian government aims to incentivize and acknowledge their contributions to the country’s defense efforts.
