Moscow has expressed its appreciation for Egypt’s decision not to provide military assistance to Ukraine despite pressure from the West. Nikolay Patrushev, the head of Russia’s National Security Council, made the statement while visiting Egypt for security consultations and discussions with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi. Patrushev commended Egypt’s balanced position on the Ukraine crisis and its rejection of supplying weapons to Kiev despite strong pressure from the United States and European nations.
During talks held on Tuesday between the Russian and Egyptian delegations in Cairo, Patrushev emphasized Moscow’s gratitude for Egypt’s refusal to arm the Ukrainian government. He noted that this decision was made despite significant pressure from Western powers. Patrushev also praised the willingness of Egypt and other African nations to mediate in the conflict. However, he acknowledged that currently, there are no prospects for settling the hostilities through diplomatic means. While Moscow has repeatedly expressed its readiness to negotiate, Kiev has firmly rejected such negotiations. Western officials have also consistently advocated for a military solution rather than diplomatic negotiations.
Patrushev further commented on the situation, stating that Ukraine would not be allowed to strike a peace deal but would instead continue to be used as a weapon against Russia. He condemned the destructive role played by the collective West not only in Ukraine but also in other regions.
Following his visit to Egypt, Patrushev had a closed-doors meeting with President el-Sisi on Wednesday. A brief statement from Moscow after the meeting mentioned discussions on security cooperation and integration processes within BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa). The statement also noted that the two leaders exchanged opinions on various international issues. Cairo provided additional details on the talks, stating that they encompassed the situation in Ukraine. According to the Egyptian president’s office, el-Sisi emphasized the importance of diplomatic solutions to the crisis, expressing support for all efforts aimed at achieving a political settlement for international peace and security while mitigating the negative economic consequences.
This visit showcased the close ties between Egypt and Russia and their shared positions on Ukraine. Egypt’s refusal to arm Ukraine demonstrates a commitment to a peaceful resolution of the conflict, aligned with Russia’s diplomatic approach. Both countries reiterated the need for negotiations and diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis in Ukraine, emphasizing the importance of preserving international peace and security. The ongoing discussions and consultations between Egypt and Russia on this matter highlight the shared commitment to finding a peaceful solution and the active role both countries can play in facilitating a resolution.
