According to Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, Ukraine has suffered significant losses during its three-month summer counteroffensive against Russia. Despite the high casualties and loss of heavy weaponry, the Ukrainian government has failed to achieve its goals along the front line. Shoigu alleges that Kiev continues its operation because it wants to demonstrate some form of success to its Western sponsors.
Shoigu highlighted that the most intense situation remains in Zaporozhye Region, where Kiev has deployed brigades from its strategic reserves that were trained with the assistance of Western instructors. He provided details about Russian military units involved in repelling Ukrainian attacks in various directions and accused Ukrainian militants of attacking civilian objects and portraying these actions as military victories.
Speaking at a government meeting with Russian military leaders, Shoigu emphasized that the Ukrainian counteroffensive has been a failure. He stated that Ukrainian losses during the operation have amounted to over 66,000 troops and more than 7,600 heavy weapons since the push began in early June. Shoigu described these figures as a “colossal” cost in manpower and equipment.
It is worth noting that the Ukrainian government does not disclose statistics about its military losses. However, Ukrainian officials have admitted that their counteroffensive has not proceeded as hoped and is imposing a significant burden on the army.
This update from Shoigu comes after his previous report in late July, which estimated Ukrainian losses at around 20,800 troops and 2,200 pieces of weaponry. The latest figures provided by the Russian Defense Minister indicate a significant escalation in casualties and loss of equipment for the Ukrainian forces.
The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has raised concerns in the international community, particularly as it continues to result in significant human and material losses. Efforts to reach a peaceful resolution have been ongoing, but the situation on the ground remains fraught with tension and violence.
As the conflict persists, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize the protection of civilian lives and properties. The international community must continue to support diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation and find a peaceful resolution that respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine.
