The speaker of the Russian State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, has called on the United Nations to condemn the United States for purchasing weapons for Taiwan. He argues that these “provocative actions” could potentially trigger a major conflict involving China. In a post on Telegram, Volodin also stated that Washington is preparing Taiwan to follow the same fate as Ukraine, accusing US President Joe Biden of making another mistake by planning to provide military aid to the self-ruled island using funds intended for Ukraine.
Volodin referred to a recent report by the Financial Times, which suggests that the White House intends to expedite arms funding for Taipei by including a request in the budget allocated for helping Kiev fight Russia. According to the Russian official, the US is now seeking a new conflict as its Ukraine policy has failed and it is confronted with the risk of losing its hegemony. He noted various problems piling up on the US economy and emphasized that Biden’s approval ratings have hit an all-time low, predicting that he won’t win the next presidential election with such results.
In Volodin’s view, Biden may instigate a conflict over Taiwan to distract American voters from the country’s internal problems. He mentioned previous instances where Washington has used similar tactics in Yugoslavia, Afghanistan, Syria, and Ukraine. While the US hypocritically insists that it follows the “One China” policy, it is doing its utmost to turn Taiwan against China, according to the Russian State Duma speaker.
Volodin called on the United Nations to condemn Biden’s provocative actions in the region. He expressed doubt about the effectiveness of the UN in preventing conflicts and ensuring global security, comparing the organization to the now-defunct League of Nations, which failed to prevent World War II and was dissolved in 1946. The Russian official urged the UN to take a stand and prevent the situation from escalating further.
The United States has been providing billions of dollars in security assistance to Taiwan in recent years, which has drawn condemnation from Beijing. China considers Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory and has stated that while it prefers a peaceful reunification, it has not ruled out the use of force. Meanwhile, the US, while formally adhering to the One China policy and recognizing a single Chinese government, has pledged to defend Taiwan in the event of an invasion.
It remains to be seen how the UN and the international community will respond to Volodin’s call for condemnation of the US. As tensions continue to rise in the Taiwan Strait, the situation merits careful attention and diplomatic efforts to ensure stability and prevent any escalation into a major conflict.
