Recently, Justin Trudeau, the Prime Minister of Canada, hosted the 2023 Liberal Party caucus retreat in London, Ontario. The retreat aimed to address the PM’s declining public image and strategize on how to navigate the multiple crises facing the country. Additionally, the Liberal Party is grappling with a significant drop in the polls.

As Trudeau departed from the caucus retreat, he encountered a protester who heckled him, accusing him of “selling out our nation.” The video of the incident showed a convoy of gas-guzzling vehicles following the Prime Minister’s vehicle.

The following day, on September 15th, Trudeau welcomed President Marcelo Rebelo De Sousa of Portugal to Toronto. The event included a photo opportunity and the opening of a photo exhibit showcasing the Portuguese Diaspora. However, Trudeau faced another confrontation with protesters during the welcoming ceremony. Despite the hostility, he waved towards the crowd.

It has become a common occurrence for protesters to target Trudeau whenever he visits the Greater Toronto Area. Many of these demonstrators are expressing their frustrations over the housing crisis that Canadians are currently facing. They blame the escalating immigration rates under the Liberal government for exacerbating the issue. Additionally, they criticize the careless spending throughout the pandemic, which has contributed to record-high inflation. The rising carbon tax, intended to combat climate change, has further burdened citizens by increasing the prices of essential goods and fuel.

To gain deeper insights into the sentiments of the protesters, I visited Metro Hall in downtown Toronto. The individuals I interviewed expressed their belief that Justin Trudeau is directly responsible for many of the challenges they face. They viewed the opportunity to air their grievances as the only way to hold him accountable.

Recent polling conducted by Abacus shows the Pierre Poilievre Conservatives leading the Justin Trudeau Liberals by double-digit points. The Conservative Party’s advantage has steadily grown over the past few months. As a result, there is a growing conversation about whether Trudeau should step down as the leader of the Liberal Party if they hope to retain seats in the upcoming election, given his tarnished public image.

Critics argue that some protesters’ vulgar behavior may appear disrespectful towards the office of the Prime Minister. However, those demonstrating claim that Trudeau deserves such treatment due to his demonization of fellow citizens during the 2021 election campaign. They highlight his divisive rhetoric surrounding individuals’ vaccination status as a reason for their intensified opposition.

In summary, Justin Trudeau’s recent hosting of the Liberal Party caucus retreat was overshadowed by protests and confrontations with demonstrators. The Prime Minister’s declining public image, coupled with crises plaguing the country, has led to a significant drop in the polls for the Liberal Party. The housing crisis, inflation, and carbon tax are among the concerns raised by the protesters. The situation has sparked discussions regarding Trudeau’s leadership and the potential consequences for the upcoming election.
