According to recent national polling conducted by Premise, the 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, is currently leading Joe Biden in a potential general election match-up. Conversely, the same poll indicates that Ron DeSantis would lose if pitted against Biden in a general election match-up. Another important finding from the Premise poll is that Trump possesses a significant lead over DeSantis in the GOP primary. This polling data effectively dispels one of the arguments put forward by Team DeSantis, which maintains that Trump is incapable of winning the general election.
In terms of specific numbers, the poll reveals that Trump currently holds a 42% to 40% lead over Biden. If he were to prevail in the popular vote, Trump would achieve one of the most substantial electoral college victories in decades. The reason behind Trump’s advantage over Biden lies in the fact that 37% of independents support him, while only 17% of independents favor Biden.
Conversely, the same poll demonstrates that Biden would emerge victorious over DeSantis with a slim margin of 37% to 35%. Notably, DeSantis receives a meager 24% of the independent vote, which is a considerable 13 points lower than what Trump receives. This finding contradicts Team DeSantis’ claim that Trump is incapable of appealing to independent voters. On the contrary, it is Governor DeSantis who struggles to garner support from this crucial group of swing voters.
Moreover, the Premise poll exhibits Trump’s dominance over DeSantis in the GOP primary, with a nearly 30-point lead. Trump’s lead has even increased by 6 points since the last poll conducted by Premise.
President Trump himself took to the platform TruthSocial to address the poll results and criticize DeSantis. He commented, “Great Poll numbers this morning. Ron DeSanctimonious might as well turn around & head back to Florida, where they don’t see him at all lately – he is wasting his time. Ron was elected Governor not to spend all of his time campaigning for another position.” Trump drew a parallel between DeSantis and former New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who failed to gain popularity in his presidential campaign after departing from his responsibilities in New Jersey.
Further expressing his thoughts on the matter, Trump claimed that Biden arrested him due to his lead in the polls. He argued, “Please remember that the only reason I was indicted (ELECTION INTERFERENCE) is because the Democrats don’t want to run against me. They weaponized the DOJ & FBI.” Trump emphasized his superiority over Biden in nearly every poll and stressed that the past elections were rigged. In addition, he referred to the opinions of critics such as Doug Schoen of FoxNews as being consistently wrong, using the phrase “the same failed pundits and losers.”
