According to a new poll conducted by Florida Atlantic University (FAU), Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is trailing former President Donald Trump by a significant margin of 20 points in Florida. The poll indicates that DeSantis’s popularity has continued to decline among GOP voters due to his unpopular globalist policies.
The data from the poll reveals that Trump holds a substantial lead over DeSantis, garnering support from 50% of respondents compared to DeSantis’s 30%. The other GOP candidates in the race, such as Ramaswamy, Scott, Christie, Hutchinson, Pence, and Haley, are far behind Trump, with their polling numbers ranging from 1% to 4%. In a head-to-head matchup between Trump and DeSantis, Trump maintains a comfortable lead of 54% to 37%.
One significant finding of the poll is Trump’s impressive lead over DeSantis in Miami-Dade County, where Trump secures a commanding advantage of 70% to DeSantis’s paltry 11%. DeSantis had previously boasted about his role in shifting the traditionally Democratic-leaning Miami area to a Republican stronghold. However, the recent polling contradicts DeSantis’s claims, suggesting that it was actually Trump who managed to secure Republican support in the region. This apparent dishonesty from Team DeSantis seems to be affecting GOP voters’ perceptions of the incumbent governor.
Moreover, the poll highlights that white, working-class voters in Florida strongly prefer Trump over DeSantis, with a significant 27-point gap between the two candidates. Trump has effectively exposed DeSantis’s policies, which are perceived as being anti-working-class and pro-globalist. During a rally in Iowa, Trump criticized DeSantis for his refusal to embrace tariffs, arguing that such a stance would only benefit foreign farmers and result in job losses for American workers. In fact, Trump denounced DeSantis as a “globalist sellout,” further undermining DeSantis’s credibility among GOP voters.
Supporting the poll’s findings, NationalFile reported that DeSantis had informed his Silicon Valley donors, who are known for their globalist leanings, that he would not support tariffs. This revelation has intensified concerns among GOP voters regarding DeSantis’s commitment to America First policies, which are highly favored among the Republican base. DeSantis’s disappointing Congressional voting record on globalist issues has further contributed to his declining support in the GOP primary.
Despite these damaging indicators, some GOP establishment politicians, such as Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, continue to align themselves with DeSantis. Trump publicly criticized Reynolds on his TruthSocial platform, expressing disappointment with her neutrality in the race. He recounted his previous efforts to support her campaign and stressed the importance of politicians embracing America First policies. Trump’s criticism of Reynolds underscores the potential political consequences faced by those who oppose the prevailing wishes of GOP voters and align with candidates like DeSantis.
It is clear that Republican voters in Florida prioritize America First policies and are growing increasingly disenchanted with candidates who diverge from this agenda. Ron DeSantis’s decline in popularity, as demonstrated by the FAU poll, serves as a warning to other GOP politicians that they risk facing similar political consequences if they fail to prioritize America First principles and align themselves with globalist ideologies.
