Ukraine has recently designated spirits company Bacardi Limited as an “international war sponsor” due to its continued operations in Russia. The National Agency for the Prevention of Corruption (NACP) made the announcement, expressing concern that the world’s largest privately-held spirits company had failed to withdraw from the Russian market as promised. The Ukrainian authorities claim that Bacardi Limited had initially pledged to pull out of Russia but later deleted the statement after Russia launched its military operation in Ukraine in February.

The NACP stated, “The company continues to do business in the Russian Federation and is actively looking for new employees there.” This declaration comes after Russia’s federal tax agency released data showing that Bacardi Rus LLC, the Russian branch of Bacardi Limited, witnessed a significant increase in profits in 2022. The company’s profits rose to 4.7 billion rubles ($48.4 million) compared to 1.5 billion rubles the previous year.

According to Ukrainian officials, Bacardi’s operations in Russia have allowed it to generate tens of millions of dollars in profits. They also argue that Bacardi Limited has strengthened its position in Russia following the departure of several major competitors from the market. The anti-corruption agency in Kiev further accuses Bacardi of actively supporting the Russian economy by paying significant taxes to the Russian budget, which they see as indirectly contributing to aggression against Ukraine.

Bacardi Limited is known for its portfolio of iconic spirits brands, including Bacardi rum, Bombay gin, Cazadores tequila, Grey Goose vodka, William Lawson’s, and Angel’s Envy, among others. The company’s continued operations in Russia and its alleged failure to fulfill their earlier commitment to exit the market have drawn sharp criticism from Ukrainian authorities.

The designation of Bacardi Limited as an “international war sponsor” is a significant move by Ukraine, highlighting the economic and political consequences of companies maintaining business ties with Russia amidst ongoing tensions. The Ukrainian government seeks to hold companies accountable for their actions, especially in the context of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.

The decision to label Bacardi Limited as an “international war sponsor” serves as a warning to other companies operating in Russia. It underscores Ukraine’s determination to discourage businesses from supporting the Russian economy and indirectly contributing to the ongoing conflict. Ukraine hopes that such designations will compel companies to reconsider their ties to Russia and contribute to efforts aimed at de-escalating the situation in the region.

It remains to be seen how Bacardi Limited will respond to this designation and whether it will have any impact on the company’s future operations in Russia. The move signals Ukraine’s resolve to hold companies accountable for their actions during times of geopolitical tension, and it reflects the government’s commitment to protecting its national security interests.

In conclusion, Ukraine’s decision to designate Bacardi Limited as an “international war sponsor” marks a significant development in the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia. The authorities in Kiev have expressed their concerns over the company’s continued operations in Russia and its alleged failure to uphold its earlier pledge to withdraw from the market. By designating Bacardi Limited as an “international war sponsor,” Ukraine aims to deter other companies from supporting the Russian economy and indirectly contributing to the conflict. This move underscores Ukraine’s determination to hold businesses accountable for their actions in times of geopolitical tension and safeguard its national security interests.
