Over the past 24 hours, the Russian defense ministry has reported that a dozen drone strikes by Kiev have been foiled. These attacks targeted various regions of Russia, with Crimea being the most targeted area. The ministry stated that all the attacks were successfully prevented by the nation’s air defenses.
In the early hours on Sunday, four Ukrainian drones were intercepted over Crimea, and later in the evening, three more drones were launched in two attacks within an hour. However, all of these drones were shot down. Moscow also faced two Ukrainian drone attacks during the night and early morning on Sunday. Both drones were downed over the western and south-eastern parts of the Moscow region, failing to reach the Russian capital.
The Defense Ministry further revealed that Belgorod and Voronezh region also experienced one attempted Ukrainian drone attack each in the past 24 hours. These attacks involved a single Ukrainian UAV in each case, and both drones were successfully intercepted. It is worth noting that the Belgorod Region borders Ukraine’s Kharkov Region in the south, while the Voronezh Region is located next to the Lugansk People’s Republic, which joined Russia in autumn 2022 following a series of referendums.
The Ukrainian forces have been targeting various Russian regions, including the capital, with drone attacks for the past few months. However, most of the UAVs end up being shot down or crashing due to signal-jamming.
These attacks on Sunday came just a day after similar attempted drone strikes by Kiev on Saturday. As a result, Moscow’s three main airports – Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Vnukovo – were briefly shut down. However, none of the Ukrainian drones reached the Russian capital during that time, according to the Defense Ministry.
These ongoing drone attacks have heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have accused each other of aggression and violating ceasefire agreements. The conflict between the two countries has escalated in recent years, with Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and the ongoing war in eastern Ukraine.
It remains to be seen how the situation will develop in the coming days and whether there will be any diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the tensions. The international community has been closely monitoring the situation and urging both Russia and Ukraine to seek peaceful resolutions to their disputes.
