Victoria Police have faced criticism for their recent recruitment campaign, which boasts that standards have been lowered to make the job more appealing. The information sent to potential applicants states that the initial psychological test can now be done online, the video interview component has been removed, and evidence of Covid-19 vaccination is no longer required. These changes are intended to reduce the time taken for the recruitment process, with applications now taking as little as 4-6 months.

The advertisement drew the attention of political commentator Rukshan Fernando, who took to Twitter to express his thoughts on the matter. Fernando mocked the police force, stating, “VicPol really dropping the standards with their latest round of recruitment. Even not having a Covid-19 vaccine is a feature! They should probably just drop Shane Patton from his position and start fresh and work on regaining community trust.” Fernando’s tweet highlighted his belief that the recruitment drive was a reflection of declining standards within the police force and that addressing this issue should be a priority.

The recruitment challenges faced by Victoria Police were highlighted by Police Federation of Australia President Ian Leavers back in May. He warned that if the difficulties in recruiting new police officers were not resolved, the community would be in a state of crisis. Leavers revealed that Victoria Police currently has over 800 vacancies that they have been unable to fill. This shortage of personnel puts an enormous strain on the existing officers and compromises public safety.

Leavers identified a key reason for the declining interest in joining the police force: the way they had been utilized to enforce Covid-19 restrictions during the pandemic. Many individuals became hesitant to consider a career in the police force after witnessing the strain on law enforcement and the public backlash against officers tasked with enforcing pandemic-related regulations. This loss of trust and the negative perception of the police force’s role during the pandemic has contributed to the recruitment crisis faced by Victoria Police.

Addressing the recruitment challenges in Victoria Police is crucial not only for the force but also for the safety and security of the community. Lowering the recruitment standards may be a short-term solution to attract more applicants. However, it raises concerns about the quality and effectiveness of the police force in the long run. Instead of lowering standards, it is essential to focus on rebuilding community trust and reputation. This can be achieved by conducting thorough background checks, providing comprehensive training, and implementing better strategies for community engagement.

The recruitment campaign by Victoria Police has raised significant concerns and sparked a broader discussion about the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in attracting new recruits. It is evident that there is a pressing need to address these issues and find sustainable solutions that maintain high standards while fostering community trust. A police force that is representative of and trusted by the community is essential for ensuring public safety and maintaining law and order.
