Heart attacks, also known as myocardial infarctions, can be life-threatening events. They occur when the coronary arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart become blocked, often due to the buildup of fatty deposits and cholesterol in the artery walls. This can lead to the formation of plaques that can rupture and form blood clots, blocking the flow of blood to the heart muscle. Without adequate blood supply, the affected heart muscle tissue can die.

Recognizing the signs and symptoms of a heart attack is crucial in seeking immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include chest pain or discomfort, shortness of breath, nausea, lightheadedness, or discomfort in other areas of the upper body such as the arms, jaw, or back. If you or someone around you experiences these symptoms, it is important to call emergency services right away.

However, prevention is always better than cure, and there are strategies individuals can take to protect their heart and prevent heart disease. The American Heart Association has provided recommendations for preventing heart disease and strokes. These include adopting a heart-healthy diet consisting of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, nuts, plant-based and lean animal proteins, and fish.

Regular physical activity is also essential in maintaining good health and preventing heart disease. Engaging in regular exercise and avoiding prolonged sitting can go a long way in promoting cardiovascular health.

Maintaining a healthy weight is another important factor. If someone is overweight or obese, working on weight reduction through calorie control and increased physical activity is necessary to achieve a healthy weight.

Furthermore, living tobacco-free is crucial for heart health. Smokers should quit, and non-smokers should avoid starting smoking altogether.

In addition to these preventive measures, specific foods have been identified as beneficial for heart health. Vegetables such as leafy greens, broccoli, and legumes are cardioprotective. Fruits like apples, bananas, and avocados, as well as whole grains and protein-rich foods like fish, lean meats, nuts, and soy products, are also recommended.

Alcohol consumption should be controlled as excessive drinking can lead to conditions such as high blood pressure and heart failure.

But heart health is not just about diet and exercise. In traditional Chinese medicine, there is a belief in the correlation between certain organs, the elements, colors, and tastes. During the summer, the heart is considered the predominant organ. High temperatures and humidity can easily lead to irritability, restlessness, and poor sleep quality, increasing stress on the heart. Therefore, taking care of the heart during the summer is crucial. This involves paying attention to diet and maintaining a positive mood.

According to Dr. Liu Chun, a medical doctor from the University of Tokyo, bitter melon, winter melon, pumpkin, tomatoes, luffa, cucumbers, spinach, onions, garlic, and Chinese yam are beneficial foods for the heart during the summer. These foods help relieve thirst, diminish heat, and support detoxification, which can help prevent or reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Maintaining a good mood and avoiding sadness is also important for heart health. Negative emotions can directly harm the organs and disrupt the flow of vital energy and blood, making individuals more susceptible to illness. Therefore, practicing forgiveness, kindness, and finding inner calmness through relaxation and clearing the mind can have a positive impact on heart health.

In conclusion, heart attacks are preventable through lifestyle changes such as adopting a heart-healthy diet, regular exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding tobacco and excessive alcohol consumption. Additionally, paying attention to specific foods and maintaining a positive mood can further protect the heart. Taking these preventive measures is crucial in reducing the risks of heart disease and ensuring a healthy heart.
