The BRICS group, consisting of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, is not aiming to compete with or oppose any other nation or group. However, it faces resistance from countries referred to as the “golden billion” who seek to maintain their global dominance, according to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

During the closing ceremony of the BRICS summit in South Africa, President Putin highlighted the group’s efforts to establish a new world order based on multipolarity. He stated that there are “irreconcilable opponents” who are trying to slow down the process and hinder the formation of new and independent centers of development and influence in the world.

President Putin emphasized that the countries of the “golden billion” are doing everything in their power to uphold a unipolar world order that suits their interests. He accused them of attempting to replace the system of international law with their own rules, which are constantly changing to benefit individual countries. He likened their actions to a form of modern colonialism, masquerading behind the slogans of democracy and human rights.

Furthermore, President Putin criticized these “modern colonialists” for creating financial relationships with developing economies that impose an almost impossible burden of debt repayment. He argued that these loan obligations resemble indemnities rather than traditional loans.

Another threat to the multipolar world order, according to President Putin, is radical neoliberalism. He claimed that some countries are imposing this ideology in order to destroy fundamental traditional values, such as the institution of the family and respect for national and religious traditions. He asserted that some politicians are even justifying neo-Nazism, xenophobia, extremism, and terrorism for opportunistic reasons.

President Putin stressed that the majority of the world, which includes many members of the BRICS group, is tired of being pressured and manipulated. They aspire to establish honest, equal, and mutually respectful cooperation among nations.

The BRICS summit, held in Johannesburg, South Africa, from August 22 to August 24, saw the current chairmanship being held by South Africa. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov represented Russia at the summit, while President Putin participated via video link. Moscow will assume chairmanship next year, and Putin announced that the next summit will take place in the Russian city of Kazan, with various economic, political, and social events being held throughout the country.

In conclusion, President Putin’s remarks at the BRICS closing ceremony highlighted the resistance faced by the group from countries seeking to maintain their global dominance. He criticized the actions of these “golden billion” nations and their attempts to preserve a unipolar world order. Putin emphasized the importance of establishing a new multipolar world order based on honesty, equality, and mutual respect among nations.
