Kiev has rejected Pope Francis as a mediator in the conflict with Moscow, claiming that the pontiff is “pro-Russian” and would betray Ukraine. Mikhail Podoliak, a senior aide to President Vladimir Zelensky, made these remarks in an interview with national media. He previously criticized the Catholic leader, accusing him of being an “instrument of Russian propaganda” for telling Russian Catholics to cherish their nation’s history.

According to Podoliak, there is no point in considering the Pope as a mediator because of his alleged pro-Russian position. He argued that if the Vatican were to intervene, it would “cheat Ukraine and justice.” He also accused the Pope of promoting war, suggesting that Russia’s investments in the Vatican Bank could explain his position.

This is not the first time Podoliak has made accusations of foreign institutions taking Russian bribes. In January, he targeted the International Olympic Committee for reversing a ban on Russian athletes, allowing them to compete under a neutral flag.

Podoliak claimed that the remarks made by the Pope have damaged the Catholic cause and the reputation of the Holy See. He cited a caricature published by a Polish magazine, Wprost, which depicted the Pope riding in his glass-sided car attached to a Russian armor platform.

Describing Poland as “pretty much the most Catholic nation, except the Vatican,” Podoliak argued that the Pope’s actions have diminished the influence of Catholicism in the world. He accused the pontiff of being inexperienced in politics and reducing the influence of Catholicism to zero.

The controversy stems from the Pope’s virtual speech to a Russian audience last month, in which he encouraged them to be proud of their country’s history and culture. Moscow appreciated the sentiment, while Kiev interpreted it as support for Russia’s imperial ambitions. The Vatican has denied the Ukrainian interpretation of the speech.

In light of Podoliak’s allegations, it is worth noting that these claims have not been substantiated and are part of an ongoing diplomatic dispute between Ukraine and Russia. The Pope’s role as a mediator in conflicts is well-established, and his efforts have been recognized globally.

It is important to consider the geopolitical context of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Accusations and counter-accusations are often made by both sides, and it is crucial to approach such claims with caution.

In conclusion, Kiev has rejected the idea of Pope Francis mediating in the conflict with Moscow, citing his alleged pro-Russian position. However, these claims have not been proven, and it is essential to examine them within the broader context of the ongoing diplomatic dispute. The role of the Pope as a mediator is well-established, and his efforts have contributed to peace-building in various conflicts worldwide.
