Comment by Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova on Australia’s and other Western countries’ response to foreign policy actions by the Solomon Islands
“We have noticed a sharp reaction, bordering on hysterics, by Australia’s ruling circles to the signing of a security cooperation agreement between the Solomon Islands and the PRC.
We should note on our part that the Australian authorities invariably deny Russia’s concerns over NATO’s unrestrained eastward expansion and military buildup on Russia’s borders.
Yet they categorically condemned the small island nation 1,500 kilometres off the Australian coast when it dared to challenge Canberra’s monopoly, appropriated for no reason, on the provision of security in the South Pacific subregion.
All of this highlights once again the double standards of Australia’s foreign policy and the fact that Australian politicians have a deep-rooted disdainful neo-colonial perception of the small nations of Oceania.”
