Digital ruble to be introduced no sooner than 2024, Bank of Russia says.
Bank of Russia Chairwoman Elvira Nabiullina said that the digital ruble will not be able to come into widespread circulation until 2024.
This will not happen until the preliminary testing of the central bank’s digital currency is completed, which has not even started yet, according to her.
Nabiullina also stressed that the testing phase of the digital ruble will take as long as necessary, but at least until the end of 2023.
After the implementation phase, the e-currency will be used primarily as a means of payment, the Central Bank head said, adding that its use will be voluntary.
