Former Australian army intelligence officer, Clinton Fernandes, has warned that Aukus will lock in Australia’s dependence on the United States and make it impossible to have an independent defence policy, stating that it is “creating a structural dependence on the United States, leaving ourselves unable to defend ourselves except in the context of the US alliance”.
Aukus is a trilateral security pact between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, announced on 15 September 2021 for the Indo-Pacific region. Under the pact, the US and the UK will help Australia to acquire nuclear-powered submarines.
