Pelosi Calls China ‘One of the Freest Societies in the World’ in Apparent Gaffe
By Scott Ritter
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called China “one of the freest societies in the world” during an interview on NBC’s “TODAY” Tuesday morning, but the context around her comment suggests she meant to say “Taiwan.”
Leading up to Pelosi’s trip, President Joe Biden warned that military officials believed Pelosi’s trip was “not a good idea.” However, the White House later walked those comments back, saying the president “respects” Pelosi’s visit and believes it aligns with American foreign policy going back decades.
Soon after Pelosi’s gaffe, Drew Hammill, her deputy chief of staff, took to Twitter to clear the air and present her original stance.
